Tooth Extraction

Tooth extractions are a common dental procedure that involves removing a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. Extractions are necessary for various reasons, including severe decay, gum disease, trauma, or overcrowding. Although the idea of losing a tooth may be unpleasant, extractions can help prevent more severe dental issues and improve overall oral health.

Reasons for Tooth Extractions

There are several reasons why a dentist may recommend tooth extraction:
•  When a tooth is so damaged by decay that a filling, crown, or root canal can't fix it, extraction is often the best option to prevent the infection from spreading.
•  Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) can weaken the structures that hold teeth in place, sometimes making extraction necessary to stop further bone loss and preserve surrounding teeth.
•  For patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, extractions are sometimes needed to make space and allow teeth to align correctly.
•  Wisdom teeth often emerge misaligned or fail to fully erupt, becoming impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, or damage to neighboring teeth, and extraction can prevent these complications.
•  Teeth that are broken or fractured beyond repair due to injury may need extraction, especially if the root is damaged.

The Tooth Extraction Process

Tooth extraction is typically performed under local anesthesia, ensuring the area around the tooth is numb and the patient remains comfortable. There are two primary types of extractions.

Simple Extraction

For visible teeth that are easily accessible, Dr. Sally Moser uses a tool called an elevator to loosen the tooth before gently removing it with forceps. Simple extractions are often quick and straightforward, with minimal recovery time.

Surgical Extraction

In cases where the tooth is impacted or has broken off at the gumline, a surgical extraction is often required. This involves making a small incision in the gum to access the tooth. Surgical extractions are more complex and may require stitches, but they are typically performed with minimal discomfort thanks to modern anesthetics.

Post-Extraction Care and Recovery

Proper post-extraction care is crucial for healing and preventing complications, such as infection or a painful condition called dry socket, where the blood clot dislodges prematurely. To promote healing:
•  Bite on Gauze: After the extraction, we will place gauze over the socket. Biting down on it for 30 to 45 minutes helps form a blood clot and stops bleeding.
•  Avoid Straws and Smoking: Using straws or smoking can dislodge the clot, increasing the risk of dry socket.
•  Apply Ice Packs: Applying an ice pack to the outside of the cheek in intervals can help reduce swelling and discomfort.
•  Take Prescribed Medications: Over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribed medications can alleviate discomfort. Antibiotics are also often prescribed to prevent infection.
•  Stick to Soft Foods: Eating soft, nutritious foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and soups for the first few days can aid recovery.

Replacing an Extracted Tooth

In some cases, tooth replacement options such as implants, bridges, or partial dentures are recommended to maintain bite function and prevent neighboring teeth from shifting. Replacing missing teeth can help preserve jawbone density, maintain proper alignment, and support long-term oral health.
