Mouth Guard

Dental model showcasing a protective blue mouthguard that can be used to alleviate bruxism.Night mouthguards, also known as nocturnal bite guards or nightguards, are essential for individuals who suffer from bruxism, or teeth grinding, as well as those with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. These custom-fitted oral appliances are worn during sleep to prevent teeth from clenching or grinding against each other, which can cause tooth damage, jaw pain, headaches, and other issues over time.

Night mouthguards are designed to protect teeth from excessive wear, reduce discomfort, and promote better sleep quality for those affected by these common conditions. Mouthguards can also help avoid the need for restorative treatments like fillings, crowns, or root canals. This makes them a cost-effective preventive measure for those prone to teeth grinding and clenching.

Understanding Bruxism and Its Effects

Bruxism, the medical term for teeth grinding, is a condition that affects millions of people, often unknowingly. Many people with bruxism grind or clench their teeth during sleep, which means they may not even know about the condition until they start experiencing symptoms or a dentist identifies signs of wear on their teeth. Symptoms of bruxism can include chipped or flattened teeth, jaw soreness, headaches, and even ear pain. Left untreated, bruxism can lead to tooth fractures, enamel erosion, and jaw joint disorders.

TMJ disorders, which involve pain or dysfunction in the jaw joint and muscles, can also cause clenching and grinding. For those with TMJ disorders, night mouthguards can help alleviate some of the pressure on the jaw, reduce pain, and prevent further damage to the teeth and jaw joint.

Types of Night Mouthguards

Night mouthguards come in various forms, each with unique benefits depending on the severity of the grinding or clenching.

Over-the-Counter (OTC) Nightguards

OTC nightguards are available at most pharmacies and are a more affordable option. These are usually made from soft materials and come in standard sizes, making them easy to obtain but often providing limited comfort and protection. Since they are not customized, they may not fit as snugly and may cause discomfort during sleep.

Boil-and-Bite Nightguards

These are a step above OTC nightguards and offer a semi-custom fit. They are softened in hot water and then molded to the user's teeth by biting down, which provides a better fit than standard OTC options. However, they may still lack the durability and comfort of a professionally made nightguard.

Custom-Fitted Nightguards

Custom-fitted nightguards are crafted by a dentist to precisely match the contours of a patient's teeth and bite. They offer superior comfort, durability, and effectiveness in reducing the effects of bruxism and protecting teeth. Custom nightguards are considered the best option for those with moderate to severe bruxism or TMJ issues due to their high level of protection.

Caring for a Night Mouthguard

To ensure longevity and hygiene, proper care of a night mouthguard is essential. Rinse the guard with cool water after each use, and occasionally clean it with mild soap and a soft toothbrush. Avoid hot water, as it can warp the material. Store the mouthguard in a ventilated container to prevent bacteria buildup, and bring it to regular dental appointments so the dentist can check for wear and fit.
