Inlays & Onlays Inlays and onlays, sometimes called indirect fillings, are conservative dental restorations that help repair and strengthen damaged or decayed teeth. They are typically recommended when a tooth has suffered moderate damage that is too extensive for a standard filling but not severe enough to require a full crown. Custom-made to fit each patient's unique needs, inlays and onlays offer a durable, natural-looking solution that preserves as much of the natural tooth structure as possible. What Are Inlays and Onlays?Inlays and onlays are both types of indirect restorations, meaning they are fabricated outside of the mouth in a dental lab and then bonded to the tooth. They are crafted from materials such as porcelain, composite resin, or gold, providing a strong and stable repair for the damaged area. Inlays are designed to fit within the grooves of a tooth's biting surface, while onlays extend over one or more of the tooth's cusps, covering a larger portion of the tooth. Inlays are used when damage or decay is contained within the grooves of the tooth, without affecting the cusps. They fit snugly into the tooth's crevices, providing a precise and seamless repair. Onlays, also known as partial crowns, cover a larger surface area, including one or more of the tooth's cusps. They are often used when the tooth is too damaged for a filling but does not need a full crown. Onlays offer additional support and protection to the remaining tooth structure. When are Inlays and Onlays Recommended?Dentists may recommend inlays or onlays for a variety of reasons:
The Inlay and Onlay ProcedureThe process of receiving an inlay or onlay typically requires two dental appointments. During the first visit, Dr. Sally Moser will remove any decay or damaged portions of the tooth and takes a detailed impression, which is sent to a dental lab for fabrication. We may place a temporary restoration on the tooth to protect it until the inlay or onlay is ready. At the second appointment, we will remove the temporary restoration and test the fit of the custom inlay or onlay. Once it is confirmed to fit properly, the restoration is bonded to the tooth with a strong adhesive, creating a seamless, natural-looking result that blends with the surrounding teeth. Caring for Inlays and OnlaysInlays and onlays require the same daily care as natural teeth, including brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups. With proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits, these restorations can last many years, offering a durable and attractive solution for those with moderate tooth damage.
