Dental Filling

By filling in cavities or damaged areas, fillings restore the tooth's natural shape and function, preventing further damage and maintaining oral health. With advancements in dental materials, it is possible to make fillings that are nearly invisible, durable, and long-lasting, providing both functional and aesthetic benefits.

When are Dental Fillings Needed?

Dental fillings are typically required when a tooth has developed a cavity, which is a small hole caused by bacterial decay. Plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, forms on teeth and produces acids that erode tooth enamel over time. When the enamel is weakened or broken, cavities form, creating areas where bacteria can further penetrate the tooth, potentially reaching the sensitive inner pulp. In addition to cavities, fillings can also repair minor fractures, chips, or areas worn down from habits like teeth grinding.

It's essential to treat cavities early on, as untreated decay can progress and lead to more severe issues, such as infections or abscesses, that may require more extensive treatments like root canals.

Types of Dental Fillings

Dental fillings come in several materials, each with its own benefits and ideal applications.

Composite Resin Fillings

Made from a mixture of plastic and fine glass particles, composite fillings are made to match the color of natural teeth, making them a popular choice for visible areas like front teeth. They bond well to the tooth structure and provide a natural look but may wear down faster on biting surfaces compared to metal fillings.

Amalgam Fillings

Known for their durability, amalgam fillings are made from a mixture of metals, including silver, mercury, tin, and copper. They are highly durable and are often used for back teeth, where the chewing forces are strongest. However, their silver color makes them more noticeable, which is why they are usually preferred for molars.

Ceramic Fillings

Ceramic, or porcelain, fillings are both durable and tooth-colored, offering a natural appearance similar to composite resin but with greater stain resistance. They are often used for larger fillings and are popular for patients seeking a long-lasting, aesthetically pleasing option.

Gold Fillings

Gold fillings are known for their durability and longevity, often lasting 15 years or more. While they are more noticeable due to their color, gold fillings are very resistant to wear, making them an ideal choice for patients who prioritize durability.

The Dental Filling Procedure

Getting a dental filling is typically a straightforward process that we can often complete in one appointment. First, Dr. Sally Moser will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area around the affected tooth. Once the area is numb, the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth is removed, and the cavity is cleaned to prepare it for the filling material.

We will then fill the cavity with the chosen material, shaping it to fit the natural contours of the tooth. Once in place, composite and resin fillings are cured, or hardened, with a special light, while other materials like amalgam and gold may require additional setting time.
