Dental Exam

A smiling female patient interacting with her dentist, who is holding a tablet to explain her dental examination results.Regular dental exams are a cornerstone of preventive oral care, helping to maintain healthy teeth, gums, and overall well-being. A dental exam isn't just a routine check-up. It's a comprehensive assessment that allows dentists to detect early signs of decay, gum disease, and other issues before they become more serious.

Consistent dental exams, ideally every six months, are essential for catching potential issues early. For both children and adults, dental exams offer a proactive approach to oral health, making it easier to maintain a bright, healthy smile over time.

What to Expect During a Dental Exam

A typical dental exam involves several steps that cover various aspects of oral health. Initially, Dr. Sally Moser will review the patient's medical history, discussing any medications, allergies, or health changes since the last visit. This is crucial, as certain health conditions can directly impact oral health, and some medications may cause dry mouth or other side effects that increase the risk of cavities.

During the examination, we will visually inspect each tooth, as well as the gums, tongue, and other soft tissues, to check for any signs of decay, inflammation, or infection. We may also use small instruments, like a dental mirror and probe, to closely examine hard-to-reach areas for any hidden plaque or early decay.

X-rays for a Deeper View

X-rays are often an essential part of a dental exam, allowing us to look beneath the surface. X-rays can reveal issues that are not visible during a physical examination, such as decay between teeth, bone loss due to gum disease, and infections or cysts in the roots. For many patients, dental X-rays are typically taken once a year, though this may vary depending on individual oral health needs and the presence of any specific concerns.

Checking for Gum Health

Gum health is just as important as tooth health, as gum disease can lead to significant complications if untreated, including tooth loss and systemic health issues. During a dental exam, we will measure the spaces between the teeth and gums to check for signs of gingivitis or periodontal disease. Early detection of gum issues allows for prompt treatment, helping to prevent the progression to more severe stages that might require more extensive treatment.

Oral Cancer Screening

Dental exams also typically include an oral cancer screening. We will check for unusual lumps, lesions, or discolored patches in the mouth, throat, and neck areas, as early detection of oral cancer can significantly improve treatment outcomes. Patients who use tobacco or alcohol, or who have a family history of oral cancer, may benefit from more frequent screenings.

Tailored Advice for Better Oral Health

One of the benefits of regular dental exams is the personalized advice patients receive from Dr. Sally Moser. After assessing your oral health, we can recommend tailored steps to enhance at-home care, from brushing and flossing techniques to recommendations on diet and lifestyle changes that can impact oral health. Patients can also ask questions and discuss concerns, making it a valuable time to learn about maintaining a healthy smile.
